Vietnam is well known for its coconuts, including the brown variety, which provide a balance of coconut water and firm, slightly sweet flesh, making them ideal for both drinking and cooking.
The Coco Produce Company source and pack coconuts in the Mekong Delta, producing 200 tonnes each month for export, mainly to the Asian and European markets.
"The brown coconut water is clear, mildly sweet, and nutrient-rich, making it a refreshing choice, particularly in tropical climates. The flesh is firm and versatile, perfect for a variety of dishes, from traditional Vietnamese recipes to international cuisines," explains Kate, Export Sales at Coco Produce Company.
"What sets Vietnam's brown coconuts apart is their versatility—they're used for both drinking and cooking. With a high water content, the coconut water is clear, mildly sweet, and ideal for enjoying straight from the shell. With coconuts from other origins we see that the water tends to be less sweet and more neutral with a slightly more acidic taste, typically used in cooking, especially in savoury dishes, rather than consumed fresh. The flesh can be fibrous and dry, making it ideal for oil production or use in curries and cooking."
"Vietnamese coconuts are medium to large in size, weighing at least 750 grams each, with a light brown colour and a rough outer shell. They are typically round or oval in shape, with three eyes visible on top. The light brown colour and oval shape also allow the Coco Produce team to create a variety of trendy and convenient designs for these coconuts. These can be customised to include our customer's brand."
The price of Vietnamese brown coconuts in 2024 has increased significantly compared to previous years, not only due to global factors that have led to higher ocean freight costs but also because of the sharp rise in demand for brown coconuts from around the globe, such as China and Europe.
"The price of Vietnamese brown coconuts in 2024 has increased significantly compared to previous years. Rising global demand for coconut products, along with higher transportation costs and production challenges (such as weather-related factors), has led to a price surge of approximately 30% from 2023 and 50% from 2022. As a result, 2024 has become the highest-priced year in the past three years."
To fill the rising demand for brown coconuts, Coco Produce is introducing several lines for brown coconuts including husked and ready to eat and drink coconuts.
"Our ready to drink coconuts are now distributed around both Asia and Europe, and we have had good feedback from customers. Our brown coconuts are packaged with convenience in mind. Each coconut is polished and features a laser-cut curve that clearly indicates the "open" eye to insert for easy drinking. Additionally, a specially designed breaking line is marked around the shell, allowing consumers to effortlessly crack it open and access the fresh, delicious flesh inside."
"As a brand that truly values nature, we use eco-friendly materials in our packaging. Our coconuts come with bamboo straws and paper labels, both of which are renewable and biodegradable alternatives to plastic. By choosing these sustainable options, we aim to reduce waste and minimize our environmental footprint.
